History of the Gatehouse In 1914, the 33-year-old paper manufacturer Pieter Smidt van Gelder commissioned architect JCWentink to design an estate with gatehouse in the Cape woods between Doorn and Leersum. The architect set to work with this assignment and designed a Country House with a Gatehouse, which was completed in 1915. Yet Smid van Gelder, together with his wife, the 32-year-old Elisabeth Cecilia Jacoba Dólleman, daughter of a mayor's family only lived there for 4 years. In 1919, Smit van Gelder sold the Landhuis, the land and the Poortgebouw to H. Colijn, director of the Batavian Import Company and later the Prime Minister of the Netherlands for 250,000 guilders. From 1943 to 1989, the estate served as a convalescent home, first for the German Labor Front and then as the “De Hoogstraat Rehabilitation Center Foundation”. In 1989 the rehabilitation center moved to Utrecht, where it still bears the same name. Since 1989, the country house has become the Central Shelter for Asylum Seekers. The detached, dilapidated Poortgebouw was sold in 2017 to Fons Bardoel and Sandra van Gaalen, who restored the Poortgebouw to its former glory and converted part of it into a Bed & Breakfast.
